Week 3

We have completed our first full week in Nursery and have had a lovely time learning, playing, exploring and settling into our new environment.

This week, we have been getting to know one another and sharing things that are special to us. We have talked about the things we like, drawn pictures of ourselves and shared some ideas about our families and homes.

We have also been getting used to our classroom rules and daily routines. Through play, songs and games, we have been practising taking turns, sharing, listening and following simple instructions. We are beginning to learn how to look after our classroom and our resources and how to be kind and caring towards our friends.

It has been a wonderful first week and we are looking forward to more fun, learning and exploring together!

Nursery week 1

 Week 4 - Whisper, Shout, Let It Out!

This week, we have been exploring our voices and sounds through the story Whisper, Shout, Let It Out!. We enjoyed experimenting with different sounds and discovering the difference between quiet and loud voices.

We also went on a listening walk, where we used our listening ears to notice the different sounds around us. We practised listening carefully, taking turns to speak and using our voices to express how we feel. We also enjoyed singing familiar songs, making sounds with instruments and talking with our friends.

Through our learning and play, we have been developing our communication and language, listening, confidence and turn-taking skills. We have had lots of fun finding our voices and discovering the sounds around us!

Nursery Week 4 Whisper, Shout, Let it Out

Week 5 - Let’s Make Faces

This week, we explored the book Let’s Make Faces by Hanoch Piven. We looked closely at our faces and talked about different facial features, including our eyes, noses, mouths and ears. We used mirrors to look at our own faces and explored how our faces can show different feelings.

We became face detectives and explored our environment, looking carefully at everyday objects and natural materials to see what they could become. We used a range of loose parts to create our own faces and enjoyed exploring different shapes, sizes and textures.

We also developed our early maths skills by counting facial features, comparing objects and using positional language such as above, below, next to and between.

We also got creative and made our own masks, choosing different materials and adding facial features to our designs. We also enjoyed mark making and drawing our own faces.

This week, we also started our phonics lessons in Nursery. We began developing our listening skills and learning to notice and explore the different sounds around us.

It has been a busy and exciting week of exploring, creating, listening and learning together!

Week 6  - Measuring Me

This week, we explored the book Measuring Me by Nicola Kent and had lots of fun learning about ourselves, our bodies and measurement. We measured our height and compared ourselves with our friends, using words such as tall, short, taller and shorter.

We also explored long, short, big and small by making big and tiny marks using a variety of resources. We enjoyed experimenting with different ways of making marks and talking about the sizes and lengths we created.

We got creative and made our own masks, using different materials to decorate them. We enjoyed talking about our faces and the different features we could see.

We had a busy and exciting week of exploring, creating, talking, listening and learning together!

Home learning:

At home, we can have fun measuring and comparing! We could measure family members using blocks, books or even our feet. We can talk about who is tall, taller, short or shorter, and look around our home for things that are big, small, long or short.

Week 6 Measuring Me Nursery

Week 7 - Handa's Surprise 

 This week we explored the story Handa’s Surprise and enjoyed learning about Handa’s journey and the different animals and fruits in the story. We practised naming the fruits, including mangoes, bananas, pineapples, tangerines and joined in with the repeated phrase, “Which fruit will Akeyo like best?” We used African drums, clapped our hands and tapped our knees to copy rhythms and clap the syllables in fruit and animal names.

We also became fruit explorers! We looked at, tasted and described different fruits, using words such as sweet, soft and juicy to talk about what we noticed.

In our mark-making activities, we explored making marks to represent numbers, developing our early writing skills and becoming more confident using different tools and resources. Throughout the week, we practised listening, taking turns, sharing ideas and joining in with our friends.

Week 8: Black History Month - Celebrating people and cultures

This week, we explored Black History Month through music, stories, food, artefacts and colourful clothing. We listened to different types of music, played instruments and enjoyed tapping, clapping and moving to different rhythms. Through these activities, we developed our listening skills, explored different sounds and practised copying simple rhythms.

We learned about some inspiring people, including Rosa Parks, Mary Seacole, Mae Jemison, Usain Bolt and Garrett Morgan. We discovered how Rosa Parks stood up for fairness, Mary Seacole cared for people, Mae Jemison travelled into space, Usain Bolt became famous for running very fast and Garrett Morgan helped make roads safer. We talked about their achievements and thought about how we can be kind, fair and helpful to others.

We explored different fruits and foods, using our senses to describe their colours, smells and textures. We investigated drums, woven baskets and colourful fabrics, noticing their shapes, patterns and materials. These experiences helped us develop our communication skills, learn new vocabulary and talk about what we could see, feel and notice.

We also explored patterns in the world around us. We looked at the stripes on zebras and the spots on leopards, noticing different colours, shapes and repeating patterns. We then created our own patterns through art and play, practising our observation, matching and early mathematical skills.

Through our activities, we celebrated different cultures, developed our curiosity about the world and learned that everyone is special and deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. 

Home learning:  We encourage you to go on a pattern hunt together at home or outdoors. Look for stripes, spots and repeating patterns on clothes, animals, leaves, buildings and everyday objects. Encourage your child to describe what they notice using words such as stripe, spot, colour, shape and repeat. Can they copy a pattern or create their own using toys, natural objects or items around the home?
